Copper Panel Roofing

Posted on: October 18th, 2013 by editor

We are pleased to present this copper panel roofing job, recently completed in Newton, MA.

copper panel roofing

Builders will use copper because of its appearance, its weather-tightness, flexibility. and fire resistance. Copper is initially more expensive to purchase, but is seen as a wise choice for longevity. The popularity of copper in architecture can be attributed to its durability, resistance to corrosion, attractive appearance and ability to form complex shapes. Historically, copper roof panels have been soldered, overlapped or seamed together. The panels may have formed edges that will add strength while providing a simple, water-tight way of joining adjacent pieces.

Masonry Meets Roofing

Posted on: October 2nd, 2013 by editor

With flat roofs, termination is likely the most critical piece that needs proper attention. A termination is anywhere the roof ends and something else like a brick wall, sided wall, junction to slate or shingles begin. In this case the siding was brick and required serious precision.

Roofing that will be repaired by Landmark Roofing

The “counterflashing” was torn up and leaking. It’s comparative to an old dental filling; it needs to be removed carefully and then prepared then finally replaced.

If these steps are not followed your roof is only half way done. This part of the job took Jim about a day and a half. The flat roof was completed in a little over two days by two workers.

We handle general repairs, waterproofing, storm damage repairs, recoating and more.

Ice Rail Installation

Posted on: July 13th, 2013 by editor

We recently had a call to a homeowner who had experienced roof damage over the winter. Ice and snow which collected on the roof fell down on the lower canopy roof causing damage to the hip slates, field slates and nearly wiping out the family dog.

Visual of Lower Canopy Roof

Installing ice rails is a way of protecting people, pets, and property such as cars, shrubs, and deck furniture, as well as lower roofing. In the photo you can see the harm avalanching snow caused to the lower roof.

repairs to roof damage from winter ice and snow

First off, new copper hip caps needed to be fabricated and installed.

While installing the ice rails, and repairing the roofing and hips, we installed a gutter debris shedder. By installing this “debris shedder”, you never need to worry about debris clogging your gutters, downspouts, or getting into the “drywells”, or any underground drainage. Those sorts of clogs can do a great deal of damage, and usually at very inopportune times! And as soon as the gutters are cleaned, they begin to fill again. Avoid all that with debris shedders.

Another benefit of this debris shedder installation, is that snow and ice will not fill, freeze, and damage gutters, and downspouts. Gutters that fill with ice and snow get quite heavy, won’t drain well when things do begin to melt, and create an “anchor” for snow on the roof, which in turn begins the ice damming.

It is never to early to protect your homes roofing, flashing, gutters and downspouts, chimneys, and all the other components that keep the water out of your home.
Landmark Roofing fabricated and installed a new triple galvanized steel ice/snow rail retention fence and repaired the field slates.

This way snow and ice collect behind the fence and melt naturally and slowly off the roof. This avoids falling snow that would previously fall down and cause damage.

It’s never too early to start protecting your home or business for the winter.

Asphalt Shingle Roof Repair: Let Our Fingers Do the Talking

Posted on: July 9th, 2013 by editor

Before last month’s big rain, Landmark Roofing replaced an asphalt shingle roof in Wellesley. The previous roof flashing had not been installed with consideration for these rake trims and were damaged over time. We took advantage of this and replaced the old and damaged trims and fascias. The trim board that we used was a composite material. Unlike wood, the composite trim will not rot, bugs won’t eat it and it will never need paint. It can, however, be painted to match your trim color.

As to not repeat the past, a new roof system was designed to better align the new trims. Careful planning and measurements will bring more years to this client’s roof.

At Landmark Roofing we like to say “let our fingers do the talking”… More than promises we like to see results. We work with you to be certain your roof is part of the whole exterior system and will give you not only benefits for your roof but many exterior protection benefits as well. Let Landmark Roofing not only tell you how but show you too!

Installing the Best, Fixing the Rest

Posted on: July 8th, 2013 by editor

Last week Jim and Donald found themselves in Newton Center installing a new hip cap to a slate roof building. “Hips” refer to the ridges on roofs that connect each section starting from the outer corners to the point of intersection at the top.

Jim and Donald installing hip cap

There are many ways junctions of slate roofing can be joined. The most cost effective solution when repairing them is to remove the existing materials and install a brand new metal or copper hip cap.

To complete this in a safe and efficient process Landmark Roofing uses it’s own fully equipped sheet metal fabrication shop. The project also requires some careful staging up to and on your slate roof.

By installing the best and fixing the rest our clients gain a revitalized structure made to last.

Working in Tight Quarters…

Posted on: June 5th, 2013 by editor

Landmark Roofing recently found itself in a tight job site but with some innovative thinking the lack of space was not a challenge for the workers.

Working in close knit neighborhood

By structuring the tarp over one whole side of the house and the surrounding area the residence as well as the fence was entirely protected.

Using tarp to prevent damage to residence and landscape

With the combination of working with a busy household, neighborhood, and tight space coming up with a clever way to get debris down ensured that the lawn and landscaping went unscathed as well as prevented major disruption to neighbors and our client.

Landmark Roofing is a name the local community trusts because we pay careful attention to what each client is trying to get out of their project–what their aesthetic tastes are, their functional needs for the space, and other considerations.

Copper Gutter Liner in Existing Wood Gutters

Posted on: May 10th, 2013 by editor

Fred and Jim installed a copper gutter liner into existing wood gutters and a slate roof in Wellesley.

Copper Gutter Liner in Existing Wood Gutters

Wood gutters require a lot of maintenance, and can be damaged by our harsh New England winters.
By lining the gutter with copper, the seams and junctions can be soldered, ensuring that the wood never gets wet, and can’t rot. Copper resists cracking and erosion, eliminating the need for maintenance in the future.
Lining the gutter with copper
We remove the slates, install ice and water shield, extend the liner onto the roof plane, and put the slates back.

After this is complete, the owner will never have to be concerned about ice dams, or damage to the wood gutters.
